"It's All About Southwestern Madison County."
The Chamber of Commerce of Southwestern Madison County is proud to welcome you to our community.
The Chamber is fortunate to represent a very diverse area that includes the cities of Granite City, Madison and Venice, the Village of Pontoon Beach and the unincorporated area known as Mitchell.
Located a days travel by horseback from the City of St. Louis, southwestern Madison County became a way station in the mid-1800's and was settled primarily middle European immigrants. Even today, their descendents form the backbone of our community.
Because of our proximity to St. Louis and having an abundant skilled workforce, southwestern Madison County soon became one of the major industrial areas in the Midwest.
Even today, when many communities are losing their industries, we retain a strong industrial base that includes US Steel's Granite City Works and the World-wide headquarters of ASF Keystone.
In addition, our location, which puts us within a 500 radius of one-third of the population of the United States, and gives us direct access to the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois river corridors, four major interstate highways and most of the major rail lines and provides direct access to all points in the United States, Mexico and Canada is making us a fast growing distribution point.
Add to this award winning parks, exemplary school systems, low crime rates, excellent emergency services, top notch health care facilities, a small town atmosphere with close proximity to the entertainment centers of St. Louis, make Southwestern Madison County a great place to live, work and play.
